On Wednesday I had the privilege of hearing Hector Olivera play this magnificent instrument at St Paul Cathedral:
He offered a wide range of selections, including Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor. But his concluding piece, an improvisation on the hymn Veni Creator Spiritus, was transcendent. It's incomprehensible to me how one person could control the registration and dynamics of the instrument while playing such technically difficult music. Unbelievable!
I mentioned the organ radio program Pipedreams in a previous post. This is a link to an episode featuring recordings of Hector.
BTW, the instrument is a Beckerath, built in 1962. A beautiful instrument. If you ever visit Pittsburgh, check out the cathedral schedule... they offer plenty of free organ concerts throughout the year.
