A lector instills the desire to know more about the Sacred Scriptures through
their proclamation, by making the Word of the Lord come alive. God's Holy Spirit truly
speaks through them.
Lectors deliver the First and Second Readings, and the intercessions of the
Prayer of the Faithful. In some cases, they may also deliver the Responsorial Psalm.
It is indeed a special privilege to be a lector. A lector must have received Baptism,
Holy Communion, and Confirmation, and be in good standing with the church.
Presentation or public speaking skills are desired. *

In the absence of an instituted lector, other lay people may be deputed to proclaim
the readings from Sacred Scripture, people who are truly suited to carrying out this
function and carefully prepared, so that by their hearing the readings from the sacred
texts the faithful may conceive in their hearts a sweet and living affection for
Sacred Scripture. -General Instruction of the Roman Missal
